Time to take you higher. Set your GPS to N 47.595762 and W -115.859886. You'll find yourself in Shoshone County, Idaho, at an altitude of 5,525 feet...on top of Fulkerson Peak. The peak was named for Marshall Fulkerson, an Idaho surveyor, in 1983. The peak is about 20 miles/40 minutes from Interstate 90 at Wallace, Idaho. Click here to view the peak in summer. DRIVING DIRECTIONS: From downtown Wallace, Idaho, go north on 6th Street. Continue from the edge of town on NF 456 Road (Nine Mile Road) for about six miles. At Bunn, turn right and continue north on NF 456 Road (Beaver Creek Road) about seven miles to Delta. Turn right on the Delta Murray road and go east 0.7 miles. Turn right on NF 1505 Road (Beaver Creek Road). You'll wind your way east and south about 6.5 miles. Toward the end of this leg you'll cross a meadow for 0.3 miles, then drive along the south side of a meadow for 0.4 miles, then drive 100 yards on the south side of a 3rd meadow and find yourself about a quarter mile west of Fulkerson Peak. Continue on NF 1505 about two miles as it wraps around the north and east sides of the peak. The road then dead ends about two miles further on, so turn around at any safe spot. The BLM map at right shows a trail that crosses NF 1505 and continues up to the peak. Do not attempt the drive in winter conditions. AWD or 4WD may be required at any time.

• And higher. To 20,000 feet over Nazi-occupied Europe on 13 July 1944, in a badly damaged B-24 Liberator. On its return from a bombing mission over Saarbrucken, Germany, the plane's four engines are failing one by one. It reaches the English coast with only one engine running. A minimum of two engines are required for a safe landing. The plane drops to 15,000 feet and the pilot orders the crew to bail out. The copilot bails out at 10,000 feet. Then the pilot feathers the remaining engine and jumps. The entire crew survived, including the Flight Engineer, Staff Sergeant Ralph R. Fulkerson.

Brown and his sons recently hacked a Southern family to death with swords. Some of the neighbors told Adam he was next. Adam asked the neighbors to relay the message that among his family there "were four or five big enough to use a gun and he did not want any trouble, but was not in the habit of running." Brown never bothered them.

• The town of Fulkerson was once found in Jackson Township, a mile and a half east of the Jackson Co. line, in Johnson County, Missouri. You can still find it on an Expedia map. Officially, it was the FULKERSON POST OFFICE, named by U.S. Senator Francis M. Cockrell for Reuben Fulkerson who homesteaded the land in 1835. The post office was closed by 1905.
  
  
• The Fulkersons were in Missouri for a generation before Mark Twain was even born. By the time he learned to write, apparently, they had become the stuff of antiquity: "The first fashionable call she received from a member of the ancient nobility, otherwise the Antiques, was of a pattern with all she received from that limb of the aristocracy afterward. This call was paid by Mrs. Major-General Fulke-Fulkerson and daughter. They drove up at one in the afternoon in a rather antiquated vehicle with a faded coat of arms on the panels" ~ The Gilded Age: A tale of today, by Mark Twain and Charles Dudley Warner, 1873.
  
  
• Seventeen years later, "America's leading man of letters" William Dean Howells wrote his great novel about social injustice in New York, "A Hazard of New Fortunes." One of the main characters was a mustachioed, blonde, idealistic publisher from the West named Fulkerson.
  
  
• Jasbo Fulkerson, born Ralph Clayburn Fulkerson to William and Minnie Fulkerson in Midlothian, Texas in 1904, was the first rodeo clown to use a barrel (due to his short legs and incredibly slow gait). One of the best-loved rodeo clowns of his time, he is enshrined in the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame at Colorado Springs, Colorado.

• You weren't around in 1919 to catch When Bearcat Went Dry at the cinema? Well, here's a synopsis of the opening scenes: "Turner Stacy, known as 'Bearcat' to his friends, is a fiery young boy who lives in the Cumberland mountains of Kentucky. He falls in love with Blossom Fulkerson, the daughter of a missionary, and promises her he will give up drinking and making moonshine." Yes, it did get more complicated than that, but ended happily with Mr. Stacy marrying Blossom Fulkerson, who was played by Vangie Valentine. It was also one of Lon Chaney's early film appearances, as the "villainous leader of a gang of Kentucky hills ruffians."
  
  
• There are few Kentucky ruffians worse than the Bad Order Band. Owensboro's Brian Fulkerson plays lead guitar.
  
  
• In 1920, Kiwanis magazine founder and editor Roe Fulkerson had an inspiration. As he wrote many years later, "I have written for you probably 100,000 words, every one of which has been forgotten save two. God inspired me to write those two: 'We Build.'" It is still the Kiwanis motto today.

• Of course you know that lead character Cassy St. John of the 1990s' Silk Stalkings television series was played by Janet Gunn, but did you know that she came into the world - in 1961 - as Janet Lynn Fulkerson of Fort Worth, Texas? She was billed as Janet Fulkerson when she was a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader and appeared in two episodes of the Love Boat TV series (1979), although she afterward married a Gunn and took that as her stage name. In 2003 she received an industry nomination (DVD Premiere Awards) for "Best Supporting Actress" for the movie, Getting There (2002).

• Captain Grant D. Fulkerson, USN, commanded the USS Biddle (DLG-34) from October 1988 to September 1990.
  
  
• Navigator Bob Fulkerson spent four days at sea...after he and seven others ditched their B-17 Flying Fortress (351st Squadron, 100th Bomb Group, 8th Air Force) nicknamed 'She-hasta.' Their plane had been crippled by German antiaircraft fire while on a bombing mission on 29 July 1944. They landed in the North Sea and drifted for four days to the Frisian Islands off the coast of Holland, where German soldiers met them on the beach. The Coloradan spent nine months at three German POW compounds: Stalag Luft III in Poland, then Langwasser at Nuremburg, and finally Stalag VIIA at Moosberg. The POWs were forced to march from one camp to another, distances of hundreds of miles, in the winter of 1944-45. They were liberated by General Patton on April 29, 1945.
  
  
• Hiland Fulkerson's granddaughter tells us that, "I never remember my grandparents using their car. They had one in the barn, but Uncle Clyde tore it down regularly. He became a real expert."

• Headlines from St. Joseph, MO:  March 24, 2005— Missouri Western State College officially opened the 12,000-square-foot Fulkerson Center, a "Gleaming, spacious conference and banquet" facility, named after contributors Lyman and Marie Fulkerson.

FULKERSON, a Methodist preacher of Franklin County, Tennessee, who, it is alleged, deserted his wife and family and eloped with a young lady by the name of Miss Ada TEMPLETON, was placed under arrest at Riverside, California, yesterday.
  
  
• The two-seat F-94 "Starfire" was America's first operational all-weather jet fighter. It first flew in 1949, with a 2-man crew that included test pilot Glenn Fulkerson.

• Many jaws dropped when Brandon Claussen-Fulkerson threw 220 strikeouts in the minors in 2001, with a 2.31 ERA, outpitching later Boston Red Sox ace Josh Beckett (203) and Cy Young Award winner Padre Jake Peavy (188). In his first major league appearance on 28 Jun 2003 he helped the Yankees defeat the Mets, pitching 6-1/3 innings with five strikeouts and allowing only one earned run. He also batted 1 for 4 and had an RBI. In 2007 he was signed as a starting pitcher for the Washington Nationals.
  
  
• Horace Fulkerson was a Deputy U.S. Marshal at Port Gibson, Mississippi in 1840.
  
  
• Not to be outdone, Saratoga, Wyoming hired a Fulkerson as the town marshal - and of course it was none other than "G-String Jack" Fulkerson.
  
  
• Speaking of strings, Gregory Fulkerson won First Prize in the 1980 Rockefeller International Violin Competition.
  
  
• Two Fulkersons are listed on the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC. James Preston Fulkerson, Sheriff of Calhoun County, Texas, was killed on April 4, 1852 while responding to a disturbance in Port Lavaca. He confiscated a rifle from the gentleman responsible for the disturbance, told him to leave town and was thereafter shot by the departing gentleman who had a second gun in his possession.   Grover Cleveland Fulkerson, a Cleveland Co., Oklahoma undersheriff, he was killed by bootleggers on August 24, 1917 while guarding the South Canadian bridge at Norman, Oklahoma.
  
  
• Norman Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, is a bridge to the past. Named for Dirck Volckertszen De Noorman, the first Fulkerson in America.
  
  
• You're six years old. It's 1960 and you're in Champaign, Illinois. Your current hero might be "Sheriff Sid," host of the local kiddie show on WCIA TV, Channel 3, whose secret identity is Sidney Fulkerson.
  
  
• The only known instance of bigamy in the Fulkerson family occurred when Mrs. Emma Fulkerson, who at that time was married to the captain of a Union gunboat, was kidnapped and married at gunpoint on 11 Jan 1865 by Isaiah Colter, the leader of a Confederate guerrilla outfit. He also held a gun to the head of the county clerk, who was thus compelled to issue the marriage license. Three weeks later, on 4 Feb 1865, Colter was killed during a day-long gunbattle in Nelson County. The Henderson, KY newspaper reported that "Mrs. Fulkerson returned to her lawful husband."
  
  
• Emma Grace Fulkerson of Carbondale, Illinois, was the 1956 Illinois Mother of the Year.

  was the mayor of Hollister, Taney County, MO, just across the river from world-famous Branson, MO. He was elected Tuesday, April 4, 1972 and served two two-year terms.
  
  
• The likelihood of meeting a Fulkerson is 13.91 times greater in Kentucky than in any other state.
  
  
• Kentucky IS the Blue Grass State, and there ain't no finer blue grass there than the Arnold Chin Band with lead singer Danny Fulkerson.
  
  
• Fulkerson Hall at Southern Illinois University was named for Professor Elbert Fulkerson, a transplanted Kentuckian.

• Sara Maria Fulkerson married Goyn Sutton in 1844. An architect and contractor, by 1860 he had become mayor of Springfield, Illinois. Sutton was in the offices of the Illinois State Journal newspaper that November, sitting next to a local politician when the news arrived that the politician had been elected. He turned and put his hand on Goyn's knee and said, "Sutton, I feel the great responsibility, God help me! God help me!" Those were the first words of newly-elected President Abraham Lincoln.

• Folkert Fulkerson died without a will in 1780, but such was his estate that two of his sons each had to put up a ten-thousand-pound bond (more than $150,000 today) to serve as administrators.
  
  
• Elizabeth Fulkerson's husband William T. Hines died of Rocky Mountain spotted fever on the Oregon Trail in 1847, leaving her with eight children - two of whom were less than ten years old. Their 20-year-old daughter Margaret took her father's place as teamster, driving the wagon across Idaho and on to their destination in Polk County, Oregon.

• Arthur Leamon Fulkerson (formerly of Raggsville, IN) attended Purdue University, captained the football team and was named an All-American. It was hard to go back to the farm after all that hoopla, so he went East to become a teacher at the Methuen, Massachusetts High School.  The street where his home stood was named in his honor.
  
  
• Harrison Fulkerson was shot and killed by the Kansas Gang when they raided and burned the town of Dayton in Cass County, Missouri, during the Missouri-Kansas Border Wars.

• Fulkerson Street in Roswell, New Mexico, is on the original 80 acres Benjamin Franklin Fulkerson and son Benjamin Ray Fulkerson bought when they moved from Hereford, Texas.
  
  
• The town of Independence, OR, has an old pioneer church which is now a museum. There is a large stained glass window over the front door, dedicated to J.M. Fulkerson and Wife.

• Speaking of close shaves, Confederate officer William H. Fulkerson was badly wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga and was about to be captured by the Yankees. He escaped riding on his brother-in-law's horse, "Great Britain." The well-bred steed was able to leap fences that the pursuing Union cavalry's nags couldn't jump. He was so grateful that he kept "Old Brit" until the horse died in 1888.
  
  
• Perhaps he won by a razor-thin margin? William T. Fulkerson was the mayor of Gillette (Wyoming) from 1948 to 1952. His grandfather was a sibling of the close-shaving William above.
  
  
• Just so you know, there were TWENTY William Fulkersons - from nine different states - who fought in the Civil War.
  
  
• This was actually topped by the THIRTEEN Fulkersons named James (six Confederate, seven Union) who hailed from at least eleven different states. The most complete current listing of the 215 Fulkersons who served on both sides during the Civil War is at Cousins Fighting Cousins.
  
  
• Fulkersons who participated in that war had about an 85% chance of survival. We accounted for 34 of the more than 500,000 Americans who died while serving the North and South.
  
  
• Tombstone, Arizona was a tough place in 1880, with characters like Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday and the Clanton Gang....and 32-year-old Fannie Fulkerson, who ran a hotel and raised three small children, single-handed.

• Fulkerson Road in the Swingle Bench area of Fallon, Nevada was named after Harold P. Fulkerson. He owned an apple orchard there.
  
  
• In its better days, the City of Drumright, Oklahoma was called Fulkerson. Historic sites there include the JW Fulkerson Building (in 1915 it was home to the Drumright Daily News) and the JW Fulkerson Homeplace.
  
  
• What avenues do the Fulkersons have? At least two, located in the cities of:
  • Lancaster, Ohio. Intersecting East Main Street. Just look for the McDonalds burger joint.

• The Fulkerson Bros. of Puxico, MO (as stamped on the crate) manufactured a mysterious piece of machinery, for some agricultural or other practical use, which "consists of several pieces of iron pipe, two metal bars, a wooden roller with burlap wrapped around it, and a couple of iron brackets that apparently support the wooden roller."

• There are no lack of Fulkersons to honor on Memorial Day. One of them is Private First Class George W. Fulkerson, serving in the US Army's 51st Engineer Battalion in 1942. He was only 21 years old - and it was just four days before Christmas - when death claimed him during the jungle fighting on Guadalcanal Island in the South Pacific. His remains were transferred to the Chattanooga National Cemetery (Section Y, Grave No. 594, 595) in August 1949. Fulkerson Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts was named for him.
  
  
• The holidays were occasionally luckier for some. Army pilot Floyd H. Fulkerson's P-38 fighter was shot down on December 25, 1944 over Japanese-held Clark Field in the Philippines. He was reported missing in action. In fact he was rescued by Filipino guerrillas, and later picked up and flown to safety in an American light observation airplane. He had a broken back, but recovered and in 1995 was inducted into the Arkansas Aviation Hall of Fame.

• It is recorded that in 1916, on an otherwise dull school day, a playground playmate dared young John Fulkerson to bite the head off a frog, and in his pride he accepted the dare. To the girls' horror he picked up a frog, plopped its head in his mouth, took a hard chomp, threw the body away and then spit the head out. And this is how family traditions get started!
  
  
• Fossil frogs - and the skeleton of a Teleoceras, an ancient rhinoceros - were discovered in May 2000 at the intersection of Fulkerson Road and SR 75 near the unincorporated town of Gray in Washington County, Tennessee.
  
  
• The Fulkerson School was located at the intersection of Thornapple Road and One-Mile Road in Wilcox Township, White Cloud, Newaygo County, Michigan, back in the early 1920s.
  
  
• Lt. Elbert Glen Fulkerson was the Flag Ship Communications Officer in flotilla of 36 landing ships during eight island invasions in WWII.
  
  
• James Evans Fulkerson worked for the Magnetic Water Company in the 1890s. Was magnetic water just a passing fad? What ever happened to it?
  
  
• OK, it was probably a tornado magnet and doesn't exist anymore, but at one time there was a Fulkerson Mobile Home Court in Palmetto, Florida.

• It was a relatively dull day in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1905, as it waited for members to arrive for a vote, when a few of the Congressmen heard someone whistling, "There'll Be a Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight." They finally traced it to freshman member Frank Ballard Fulkerson of Missouri, who continued to entertain them through his one-term career as "The Whistling Congressman."
  
  
• On a contemporary note, you can drag your lame ducks down to Fulkerson Animal Hospital in Milton-Freewater, Oregon.
  
  
• If you like history and outdoor entertainment, you may want to see the annual Civil War and James Gang reenactments at Lt. Col. William H. Fulkerson's Hazel Dell Mansion, 1510 N. State St., in Jerseyville, Illinois. His Illinois farm was frequented by prominent guests including Robert E. Lee and Jesse James. It's on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as one of the focal points of the Jersey County Victorian Festival every Labor Day Weekend.
  
  
• Bergen Fulkerson was always very boastful about his strength. One time, while helping to build a new barn, he was driving a wagon and hauling in rock for the foundation. Attempting to prove to his workmates that his strength exceeded theirs, he stood in the back of the wagon and lifted a large rock. Suddenly his feet broke through the the wagon bed. He and the rock had nowhere to go except straight down. The rock landed on his leg and crushed it, rendering him a cripple.
  
  
• The heaviest rock you'll find in Franklin, Tennessee, is in songwriter/vocalist Gregg Fulkerson's new band, Attraction 65.
  
  
• One of the heaviest songs from the 60s was "He's Not Heavy, He's My Brother." What a deep thought. It became one of the anthems of a generation trying to break free of the world's merry-go-round of war, hate and misery. The Hollies song was #3 in Britain and rose to #7 in the US Top 40. Re-released in the UK in 1988, it reached #1. And it all began in 1924, with an article written in Kiwanis magazine. It carried the title "He's Not Heavy, He's My Brother" -- and it was written by Roe Fulkerson.
