Unattached Arkansas Fulkersons

We begin with a serendipitous find from several years back - four unknown Fulkersons interred in an old Conway County, Arkansas cemetery:

Martinville Cemetery: James Adam Fulkerson (29 Sep 1888 to 7 Aug 1968); Joseph Edd Fulkerson (20 May 1884 to 19 Feb 1978); Louisa J. Fulkerson (1 Nov 1853 to 7 Jul 1914), double stone with William T. Fulkerson (5 Nov 1842 to 4 Jan 1917).

We know of a William T. FULKERSON from this site's previous Civil War research:

"Pvt. William Thomas FULKERSON, Co. A, 10th Regiment, Arkansas Cavalry (Confederate) from Van Buren, Arkansas. He was a prisoner at Rock Island, IL, from which he enlisted in the 3rd US Volunteer Infantry on 15 Oct 1864 and was sent to protect Western settlements against Indian attack as a 'Galvanized Yankee.' He received a pension for his Union service."

From LYNN/LINN family research, we learn that his wife Louisa was Louisa Jane LYNN/LINN of Morganton, Van Buren Co., AR, dau of William LYNN/LINN and Intha PATTERSON, both of whom were originally from Tennessee. The same research tells us that James Adam and Joseph (Edward) were her sons:

Children of LOUISA LYNN/LINN and WILLIAM FULKERSON are:

JOSEPH EDWARD4 FULKERSON, b. 20 May 1884; d. 19 Feb 1978, Martinville, AR.
ROSA JANE FULKERSON, b. 06 Dec 1886.
JAMES ADAM FULKERSON, b. 29 Sep 1888; d. 07 Aug 1968, Martinville, AR.
WILLIAM CLIFTON FULKERSON, b. 30 Oct 1892; d. 08 Dec 1953, Laurel, MS; m. KATHERINE HENDRICKSON; d. 16 Jul 1979, Shreveport, LA."

[NOTE: The LYNN/LINN account appears to be consistent with the facts, except that William's father was not John. His father was Michael, who died in Tennessee before Nancy moved with her children to Arkansas. There was a John FULKERSON who moved from Tennessee to Arkansas in the mid-1800s – and had both a wife Nancy and son named William – but he was only about 15 when William Thomas FULKERSON was born.]

SEPT 2009 - CONSIDERED SOLVED:

The 1860 census (Van Buren Co., Arkansas) reported the widowed Nancy FULKERSON with a son William T. who was born in TN. Other records referring to his older sister Huldah state their parents were Michael and Nancy FULKERSON of Tennessee. Michael FULKERSON was the son of James FULKERSON and Patience POTEET, and a grandson of Captain James FULKERSON of Virginia:

We can place William T. FULKERSON near Morganton, Van Buren County, AR in 1879. His name appeared on a list of Masons who helped found the Morganton Cemetery in that year.

The 1880 Census for Bradley, Van Buren County, AR shows a Tennessean, William FULKERSON, age 36 and widowed, working on the farm of some younger Tennesseans, Hardy and Mollie JOHNSON. (Thus Louisa Jane LYNN would have been his second wife.)

AFTER 1900:

A brief newspaper article from 26 Jun 1917 appeared to tell about William's son James: "Conway, June 25 - Miss Floy Martin and Ad Fulkerson of Martinville were married here about 3 o'clock this morning by the Rev. R.M. Scott, after a night drive in an auto from their home. They found considerable difficulty in securing a license, and visited the homes of various judges and pastors before they were successful."

An obituary in 2000 confirmed that "Ad Fulkerson" was indeed James Adam, son of William T. FULKERSON: "Mr. Fulkerson was preceded in death by his parents, James and Floy Martin Fulkerson."
